Then she said, “Can I tell you something about her?”

“About Grandma?”

“Yes.” Rosa looked at the window. “She wrote those checks in November.”

I didn’t understand.

“The checks. All of them. She had the bank make them in the second week of November. I drove her.” Rosa turned back to me. “For six weeks they were in the drawer of her desk in the blue folder, and she took them out and she looked at them, and twice she made me sit in the kitchen while she practiced.”

“Practiced what?”
