Money Announces Character
Dad laughed once. “Claire, don’t tell me you actually tried to cash that ridiculous thing.”
“It was real.”
The room went completely still. Only the fireplace crackled. Marcus slowly lowered his phone. “What?”
“It was real,” I repeated. “Every check was real.”
Grandma briefly closed her eyes, as if she’d been waiting for those words to reach them.
Aunt Linda stepped forward. “That’s impossible.”
“No,” Grandma said. “It is not.”
Dad pointed at me. “You deposited it?”
“Not yet. The manager explained the trust first.”
The color drained from my father’s face. It wasn’t surprise. It was recognition — and once I saw it, I wondered how many times I’d mistaken his fear for authority.
“What trust?” Marcus demanded.
Grandma looked at him calmly. “The one your grandfather and I established, before most of you understood how expensive your opinions would become.”
