WHAT RESEARCH CONTINUES TO REVEAL

The study of the Battle of Little Bighorn continues to yield new insights, as archaeological methods improve, as previously unexamined documents surface, and as Indigenous communities continue to share oral traditions that carry information about the battle from new angles.

Bioarchaeological analysis of human remains found at or near the battlefield — remains that were not initially identified during the battle’s aftermath — continues to provide information about who died and how.

The identification of remains from the battlefield has been an ongoing process, with DNA analysis and other forensic methods applied to remains recovered from excavations over the decades.
