Moving Robe Woman (Tȟašína Máni) — The Hunkpapa Lakota Woman Who Rode Into The Battle Of Little Bighorn After Learning Her Brother Had Been Killed
At Little Bighorn on June 25-26, 1876, the Lakota and Cheyenne vision won.
The soldiers who came to enforce the American vision were defeated, comprehensively and decisively.
But the American vision ultimately prevailed.
The U.S. government had resources — population, industrial capacity, military force — that the Plains nations could not match indefinitely.
The military campaigns that followed Little Bighorn, the destruction of the bison herds, the reservation system, the assimilation policies — these mechanisms eventually achieved what Custer’s cavalry had failed to achieve.
Moving Robe Woman’s story is the story of a person who lived through both sides of this history.
