Some of what is known about her experience of the battle comes through that collected oral history work.

The reliability of such accounts is a subject of genuine scholarly debate.

Miller’s methods have been questioned by some historians, who note that by the 1930s many of the participants in the battle were quite elderly, that memories of events sixty years in the past can be reshaped by subsequent experience and cultural pressure, and that the process of translation and transcription could introduce distortions that neither the interviewee nor the interviewer would easily detect.

None of this means the accounts are fabricated.
