THE RIVER AND THE GRASS

The Little Bighorn River runs through southeastern Montana in a landscape that still carries the character it had in 1876 — the wide sky, the rolling hills above the river valley, the cottonwood trees along the water that provided shade and concealment for the great village.

The river has changed its course slightly over the decades, as rivers do.

The land has been grazed, fenced, and managed.

The monument’s maintenance has shaped the landscape within its boundaries in ways that would be unfamiliar to the people who camped there in June 1876.
