Even as Reno’s men reached the bluffs, news was reaching the camp from the northern end of the valley: more soldiers were coming.

Custer’s five companies were moving along the bluffs on the eastern side of the river, apparently trying to find a place to cross and attack the camp from the north or center.

What Custer’s plan was at this point is one of the great mysteries of American military history — he and every officer with him died, and no coherent account of his intentions survived.

What the Lakota and Cheyenne accounts make clear is that the response to Custer’s approach was organized and overwhelming.
