Moving Robe Woman was born into this world.

Her father was a respected Hunkpapa man named Crawler — Iŋyaŋkamani Ȟȟéčhetu — who appears in the historical record as a man of standing within the community.

Her brother, who would die on June 25, 1876, and whose death would send her riding into the battle, was named Deeds — Čhaŋpȟá Ičúwapi — a young man, probably a teenager.

Life in the Hunkpapa camp in the summer of 1876 was not the desperate survival of a people on their last legs.

The great camp on the Greasy Grass — which included Hunkpapa, Oglala, Miniconjou, Sans Arc, Blackfoot Lakota, and Northern Cheyenne bands — was a gathering of unprecedented size, drawn together by the vision Sitting Bull had received during the Sun Dance that spring.
