For most of its existence, the Little Bighorn battlefield was officially named the Custer Battlefield National Monument.

The name enshrined the perspective that had dominated American cultural memory of the battle: Custer as protagonist, the soldiers as the primary subjects of commemoration.

In 1991, Congress changed the name to the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument and authorized the construction of an Indian Memorial on the battlefield grounds — a monument to the Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho people who fought and died there.

The Indian Memorial was completed and dedicated in 2003.
