Moving Robe Woman (Tȟašína Máni) — The Hunkpapa Lakota Woman Who Rode Into The Battle Of Little Bighorn After Learning Her Brother Had Been Killed
She heard that her brother was dead, and she rode into the battle.
This is an impulse as old as human beings — the response of a person who has lost someone to overwhelming force and who acts in the only way that seems adequate to that loss.
This does not make her action irrational.
In the context of what was happening around her — the largest Native gathering in Plains history was being attacked by soldiers who intended to destroy the way of life of everyone in that camp — riding into the battle was a reasonable response.
It was a response within a recognized Lakota tradition.
