Moving Robe Woman (Tȟašína Máni) — The Hunkpapa Lakota Woman Who Rode Into The Battle Of Little Bighorn After Learning Her Brother Had Been Killed
Many Lakota bands who were wintering on the Plains, far from any reservation and with no practical way to comply in the dead of a northern Great Plains winter, were declared hostile by the U.S. government.
The Army was authorized to force them onto reservations.
This was the political context in which Moving Robe Woman’s camp gathered on the Little Bighorn River in June 1876.
They were not raiders.
They were not hostiles seeking conquest.
They were a people who had been told that their way of life, their sacred lands, and their existence off government reservations was now illegal — and who had gathered, in strength, to assert that they would not comply.
