“Preston — you said the records were gone.”
His head snapped toward her. “Shut up.” That single command revealed more than all their staged family photographs ever had. Their perfect life was already coming apart.
Chapter 5 — Cooperating
I took out my phone. “The clinic administrator confessed six weeks ago. In exchange for a reduced sentence, he gave investigators the altered files, the bank transfers, and every message you sent him.”
Preston’s confidence curdled into anger. “You’ve been spying on us?”
“No. I’ve been cooperating with the district attorney.”
Two hospital security officers appeared at the far end of the hallway. They didn’t approach — they were waiting, exactly as I’d asked.
