Sam was counting programs in stacks of twenty-five when I entered the office.

“You have eighty-seven here,” he said.

“I thought we ordered a hundred.”

“Thirteen are still in the box.”

I had no idea why that information mattered to me until later.

It was one number that had a simple explanation.

Eighty-seven on the table, thirteen in the box.
