My Brothers Could Have Destroyed His Family — Instead We Chose the Law
Because Preston had spent years telling everyone my brothers were dangerous men who broke laws, and my brothers spent that entire night proving what truly made them dangerous, which was the opposite: that they knew, with total precision, how to use the law to destroy a man like Preston, and that they were disciplined enough to do it that way and only that way.
My retribution was never going to be executed with fists.
It was executed with evidence.
That is a slower weapon, and a colder one, and an incomparably more complete one, and it leaves you, at the end, with clean hands and a free life instead of a cell of your own.
I have thought a great deal about that phrase — clean hands — because it names the choice that the whole night turned on, and it is a choice that is offered to more people than admit it, and refused by fewer than should.
When someone does to you what Preston did to me, there is a version of retribution available that is fast, and hot, and enormously satisfying, and I would be lying if I said no part of me wanted it.
