My Colonel Ex-Husband Invited Me to Christmas, Unaware I Was Bringing His Four Children
Margaret’s admission hung between us longer than the investigator’s question had.
For eight years I had imagined the day someone in Daniel’s family would learn the truth.
Sometimes I imagined shouting.
Sometimes I imagined handing his mother a folder and watching her read it in front of everyone.
I had never pictured the real moment: my four children standing in borrowed holiday light, an investigator at the door, and their grandmother looking as frightened as they were.
Daniel turned toward her.
“Mother, what exactly have you done?”
Margaret held the back of a chair to steady herself.
“Something I should have done years ago.
I asked for the records to be examined.”
“You went behind my back?”
“You told me Kesha had invented a pregnancy.
You told me there were no children.
Then I found your father’s correspondence and a copy of an acknowledgment bearing your signature.” Her voice trembled, but she didn’t lower it.
“I wasn’t going to ignore that a second time.”
The investigator introduced himself as Major Adrian Cole, assigned to review a complaint about statements in military family-care paperwork and related administrative records.
He was careful with his words.
He hadn’t come to declare Daniel guilty in his mother’s living room, he explained.
