“What did you hear?”

She looked toward the front of the bus, then lowered her voice.

“He said, ‘The girl can be dealt with later.

First I need the mother’s signature.’”

I stayed still long enough for her to continue.

“He said the house was clean because I’m registered at Grandma’s.”

Lily did not know what that meant.

Neither did I, not in the way the speaker appeared to mean it.
