PART 1 — FOUR YEARS OF WAITING

My daughter Chloe had waited four agonizing years for this pregnancy.

Four years sounds manageable when spoken quickly.

Living them was something else entirely.

Two miscarriages.

Three unsuccessful fertility treatments.

Months organized around blood tests, injections, ultrasounds, dates, numbers, and hope.

Then disappointment.

Then grief.

Then the terrible work of deciding whether to hope again.

So when Chloe finally called to tell me she was pregnant, neither of us screamed.

Not at first.

“I took another test this morning,” she whispered.

I sat down immediately at my kitchen table in Pinecrest because my knees suddenly felt weak.

“And?”

“Positive again.”

I covered my mouth.

Chloe started crying before I could.

Those first weeks were brutal.
