My daughter-in-law laughed as she gave me a $2 scratch-off for my 73rd birthday. Ten months later, my own son shoved a senior living brochure in front of me and said, “We already picked your room.” They thought I was too old to fight back. They had no idea what I had been hiding.
“Because I already know what the letter says.”
Colin turned toward me.
In his face I could see the boy who once asked me to explain why the moon followed our car, and the grown man who had told me to vacate my bedroom so his son could have it.
“Mom,” he said carefully, “what have you done?”
“Nothing to your house,” I said.
“I’ve simply decided what to do with mine.”
The kitchen went quiet, except for the small metallic click of the coffeemaker turning itself off.
Jessica threw the papers onto the counter.
“That’s impossible.”
I took another sip.
“You might want to finish reading.”
