My daughter-in-law laughed as she gave me a $2 scratch-off for my 73rd birthday. Ten months later, my own son shoved a senior living brochure in front of me and said, “We already picked your room.” They thought I was too old to fight back. They had no idea what I had been hiding.
“I know.”
“Maybe it’s good you didn’t.”
I didn’t rush to agree.
Financial troubles can be frightening, and I didn’t want my son to mistake boundaries for indifference.
“If you ever have an actual emergency,” I told him, “you can tell me the truth.
That doesn’t mean I’ll always solve it with money.
But I will listen.”
He thanked me.
