I have decided that this is simply who she is, born into her, older than any lesson — that some people arrive in the world already carrying the thing the rest of us spend our lives trying to learn, which is the instinct to put yourself between the vulnerable and the ones who would harm them.

It is the very instinct I built an entire career around, and trained for years to perform, and my daughter did it better than I ever had, in an alley, unarmed, at nineteen, with no training at all — because for me it was a job I chose, and for her it was just the truth of who she is.

I used to think the best thing in my life was that I had protected my daughter from the darkness I came from.

I understand now that I had it backward.
