Linda stepped away from the table.

“Emily, just give your father the phone.”

“I didn’t do anything.”

“Nobody said you did,” Mark answered.

He moved toward her.

I stepped between them before I had decided to do it.

Emily was behind my left shoulder, and I could see the edge of her phone case beside my arm.

Mark stopped.

“Move, Claire.”

“I need you to step back.”

“You need to stop making this bigger than it is.”

His voice had changed.

Quieter.
