Chapter 11 — What Julian Was Hunting

Now, at last, Julian’s behavior over the past year made a terrible kind of sense.

He had been searching.

Frantically, for months, tearing through his mother’s things whenever he thought I wasn’t watching, hunting for something.

A month before she died, he had barged into Evelyn’s bedroom while I was helping her dress, his face dark with a panic I had never seen on him.

“Where do you keep your private banking files, Mom?” he had demanded, not even greeting her.
