PART 1 — The Woman in the Sparkling Dress

“I’ll be at our daughter Chloe’s wedding.

How would I look in front of my new family if I skipped an event like that, right?”

I read the message from my ex-wife, Elena, and had to sit down.

Fifteen years earlier, I had stood in our hallway holding nine-month-old Maya while Elena packed her belongings into suitcases.

“You can’t give me the life I want,” she said.

“But Julian can.

He bought me a brand-new car and even took me to the Maldives.

Do you understand the kind of life he gives me?

The kind of life I deserve?”

Julian was her boss.

She had already been involved with him for months.

Then she closed the door, and I was left with six little girls who needed answers I did not have.

Fifteen years without the calls that mattered.

No birthday wishes.

No voice asking how a school performance had gone.

No response when I sent photographs or invitations.

Whatever else happened in Elena’s life, it happened outside the family she had left.
