My Family Made Me the Punchline of My Sister’s Wedding — They Had No Idea Who Was About to Walk Through the Doors
It is slow work, replacing a self-image built over three decades.
But it is possible, and it is, I am convinced, the only thing that actually works — not defeating the lie on its home ground, but relocating to ground where the truth can finally be heard, and staying there long enough for the truth to become the thing you believe.
And then, when you are strong enough, and only then, might you find yourself back in the old room one last time, by accident, at a wedding — and discover that the lie has simply lost its power over you, that the words that once defined you now bounce off, because you have spent years somewhere else becoming someone the lie no longer fits.
That is what happened to me in that fountain.
