“This is a certified cashier’s check issued by Charles’s development company, made payable directly to the victim’s mother,” Jenkins said.

Judge Alvarez leaned forward, studying the check through the clear plastic.

“Read the handwritten memo line into the record, Ms.

Jenkins.”

“The memo line, in Charles’s authenticated handwriting, says: Settlement for accidental fall,” Jenkins read aloud.

“This check was offered along with a pre-written false affidavit demanding that the mother sign a statement claiming the child tripped over a rug.”

Charles shifted in his leather chair, his thumb automatically moving to adjust his gold cufflinks as he glanced at the back exit doors.
