My father, who seemed to have forgotten the wine entirely now, his mind visibly recalculating the social arithmetic of the room, tried a bewildered tone.

“Noelle, this is absurd.

Why would you keep something like this hidden from your own parents?”

And I gave him the answer I had been waiting thirty-two years to give, in a voice that carried clearly across the nearby tables.

“Because I wanted to see exactly how you would treat me when you believed I had nothing to offer you.”
