First Horizon Bank was printed in faded silver letters across the top.

Below that was my grandmother’s name, Beatrice, written in her own neat cursive.

I opened the stiff book to the very first page.

The transaction lines were completely blank except for one single deposit entry printed by a dot-matrix machine.

The deposit was dated November 1998.

The dollar amount on that line was blacked out with heavy marker.

Someone had crossed it out deliberately, pressing so hard the ink bled through the paper.

I turned carefully to the last page of the book.
