“You merely postponed rejecting her until you thought I was locked in.” She unclasped her engagement ring and slammed it onto the reception table.

“Someday Hannah will grow up and leave your house,” she said venomously.

“And you’ll realize you sacrificed your happiness for somebody who was never meant to stay the center of your life forever.” I looked at her a final time.

“A child does not need to stay forever,” I said quietly, “to deserve protection today.” And I left both rings on the table, and I walked out of that building with my daughter’s hand in mine.
