This isn’t who we raised you to be.

I read those lines at my desk, in a bright office, surrounded by colleagues who respected my work and superiors who valued what my mind could do.

I read the phrase this isn’t who we raised you to be, and I noticed that I felt, for the first time, nothing at all — no guilt, no old familiar tug of obligation, no reflexive urge to apologize and fix it and make everyone comfortable again at my own expense.

I did not cry.

I did not write back an anguished reply.

I forwarded the email to my attorney, who sent my parents a formal cease-and-desist letter, informing them that any further attempt to contact me or to pressure me regarding the criminal case would result in harassment charges being filed against them as well.
