Chapter 2 — Kenneth’s Watch

My husband, Kenneth Pembroke, stood a few paces from the table, impeccably dressed as always, a crystal glass of bourbon in his hand.

And as I looked at him, a small chill moved down my spine before my mind could explain it.

“Kenneth,” I said, coming up beside him, keeping my voice low.

“Are you all right?

You look like you’re about to faint.”

“I’m completely fine, Hannah,” he muttered, and he would not meet my eyes.
