I woke to the sterile smell of a hospital and the steady beep of a heart monitor and fluorescent light that stung my eyes.

I tried to sit up at once, and a firm, gentle hand pressed my shoulder back against the pillows.

“Easy, Mrs. Pembroke. You’re safe. You’re at Saint Valley Medical Center.”

I blinked until the blur resolved into a tall man in a rumpled coat, holding a leather badge.
