Sebastian closed the door to my room.

“The doctor in that recording,” he said, “is Dr.

Roman Draper.

He’s the assistant director of emergency medicine in this hospital.” Draper, he told me, had tried to log my case as a routine abdominal injury and to delay several of the tests that would have flagged how serious it was — and how deliberate.

Sebastian had overridden him because the details did not add up.
