I had lain in that hospital surrounded by a powerful family and a wall of lawyers and I had never in my life been more without anyone.

So I built the thing I had needed and not had: a place where a woman coming out of a violent house is met before she has to ask, where the loss of a pregnancy under terrible circumstances is treated as the real bereavement it is and not a private embarrassment to be moved past quickly.

I have signed a great many documents in the years since, building Parker Capital back into what my father meant it to be.

None of them has ever felt like the one that funded that foundation.
