Not frightened.

Calm, the way a man is calm about a task he has already finished in his head.

I am not going to pretend I understood, in that moment, exactly what he had put in the food.

I did not know what it was and I still, to this day, do not care to learn the chemistry of it — only that it was something he had chosen, something that worked quickly, something meant to keep two people from ever opening their eyes again.

It was in the dinner he had cooked for us with his own hands, moving easily between the stove and the counter, complaining about the lines at the grocery store, setting the plates down in front of his wife and his son.
