I knew that expression too.
He was happier than he wanted to admit.
When he said he wanted to spend three weeks with her, I did not try to stop him.
“You should go,” I told him near the entryway.
“You’ve spent enough years missing each other.”
Patrick kissed my forehead.
“Forty years together and you’re still trying to get rid of me.”
“It’s only three weeks, Patrick.”
“Three weeks.”
He picked up his suitcase, checked for his glasses, then checked for them again although they were already in his jacket pocket.
I laughed.
At the door, he turned and waved.
I watched him leave, thinking that three weeks was practically nothing after four decades together.
