You were always allowed to want a life that does not require you to disappear.

You do not need to catch him on a forgotten phone call.

You do not need a folder full of evidence and a private investigator and a corporate fraud to justify wanting to be happy.

The wanting was always enough.

It took a betrayal to teach me that, because I would not learn it any other way, and I am not proud of having needed the lesson delivered so brutally.

But I learned it, finally, and completely, and it is the one gift in all of this that I would keep even if I could give the rest back.

I am allowed to want my own life.

So are you.

And on the far side of finally believing that, there is a patio, and a spring breeze, and a sleeping daughter, and a blue sky with no end to it at all.
