Whatever I felt about Luca, I was determined that my children would never be made to feel they had to choose between their parents.

So the invitation sat on my counter, and I refused it for myself, and I waited to see what my children would want to do — leaving that choice, as much as I could, to them.

Most of the children did not want to go, and I did not push them.
