And so while I was spending my energy refusing his death, he was spending his, quietly, on the question of what his death could still be made to do.

It was that he had grasped, faster and more clearly, a thing that took me much longer to understand: that a dying person is not only a person being subtracted from the world, but a person who still, right up until the end, gets to decide what they add to it.
