My Husband Made His Doctor Promise to Give Me an Envelope Only After He Was Gone
I told myself he would tell me when he was ready.
I did not know — I could not have known — that he was preparing for the exact possibility I was refusing to look at directly: that he would go into that hospital and not come home, and that there were things a man in his position could still do, quietly, in advance, to take care of the people he was leaving.
He was not shutting me out.
He was, in the only way left to him, still taking care of me.
I just could not see it yet.
There is a particular ache in that, looking back — that in the last weeks I had with my husband, I spent some of my precious dwindling store of feeling being quietly hurt by the one thing he was doing purely out of love.
