My Husband Made His Doctor Promise to Give Me an Envelope Only After He Was Gone
When I held her for the first time, in a hospital not unlike the one where I had lost her father, I thought about the porch.
I thought about Mark’s hand resting on my stomach in the last of the evening light.
I thought about the way he had listened, on his stronger days, for every kick, and the way his whole face changed when he felt her move.
I thought about the future he had known he would not see, the one he had made his peace with while I was still refusing to look at it.
And I thought about the strangers, somewhere out in the world, who might now have more time with the people they loved because of him — a parent, a husband, a daughter, a family, going on, with more mornings and more birthdays and more ordinary days, carrying a piece of a man they would never know.
Cecelia opened her eyes.
