Luke’s legs went out from under him, and he ended up on his knees on the morgue floor, and he looked up at me with an expression I had never seen on him in six years of marriage — naked, wild, animal panic, all the smooth control finally and completely gone.

“Clover, please!” he begged, and his voice cracked and climbed.

“Please, tell them to stop.

Tell them it’s a mistake.

I’ll give you eight hundred thousand dollars, I’ll sign over the house, I’ll give you anything, everything, just don’t let them take me, please—”
