My Husband Overprotective
I could have reminded her of the ER waiting room, of her comments about my mother, of the secret cleaning receipts in Ethan’s messenger bag.
Instead, I set the forks down on the linen napkins and turned back to the stove.
I chose silence.
I gave my husband the room to stand on his own two feet.
“This is my decision, Mom,” Ethan said into the receiver.
His voice was quiet, flat, and entirely unhurried.
“I have to get back to my family now.
Goodnight.”
