My mother-in-law thought she was sentencing me to the potato patch.

She could not have understood that the patch was never the prison.

The marriage was the prison, and she had, without meaning to, given me the very afternoon I would use to walk out of it.

I dig those potatoes every autumn now, and every autumn Maya calls up the famous Cancun potato, and we laugh, and I think: they gave me the shovel, and they never once imagined what I would use it to dig my way out of.
