And the moment I understood that, the sentence that was supposed to be the final nail in me became, instead, the thing that pried the coffin open and let me climb out into the light.

Chapter 12 — The Keys

I reached into the folder, drew out a thick white envelope, and set it on the granite counter between us.

“Those are the keys to the townhouse in Chicago,” I said.

“The garage opener’s inside too.
