Chapter 9 — The Evidence Mounts

Over the next two days, Florence did more damage to her own family than I could ever have designed, because cruelty, left to run, tends to convict itself.

She went around the neighborhood market telling anyone who would listen that I was an ungrateful thief who had used her son, and then she went to the downtown office where she wrongly believed I worked as a lowly assistant, intending to humiliate me in front of my colleagues.

She stood in a lobby full of strangers and screamed that I was an adulterer and a criminal, and every second of it was captured by the building’s security cameras and a dozen phones.
