Chapter 6 — The Envelope

“You sent that package,” she hissed, stepping into my space.

“You miserable, bitter woman.”

“I returned lost property,” I said.

She opened her mouth to fire back, and behind her the door of the hospital room swung open, and Andrew stood there on crutches, gray-faced, and said, quietly, “Brenda.

Are you really going to keep lying?” She went white.

Andrew nodded me into the room and shut the door on her, and from beneath his pillow he drew a thick manila envelope.

“I found this in her purse,” he said.
