Working with Stephen, I called an emergency shareholder meeting.

Representing seventy percent of the voting power, I removed Mark as chief executive, revoked his banking access, notified our primary lenders and vendors, and ordered a full forensic audit.

It was not revenge.

I want to be precise about that, because it matters to me.

It was an emergency intervention to stop the bleeding — the same thing I had done a hundred times over twenty-eight years when something threatened the company, except that this time the threat was my own husband.

I have thought carefully about the difference between revenge and intervention, because it was the discipline that carried me through those weeks, and because I think it is the thing that let me come out the other side whole.
