I had confused self-effacement with grace.

I had believed that a good partner makes herself small so the other can feel large, and that there was virtue in never claiming what was mine.

What I learned, at the end of all this, is that there is no virtue in it at all — that a woman who refuses to claim her own name is not being generous, she is being complicit in her own erasure, teaching everyone around her, one uncorrected sentence at a time, that her contribution can be overwritten without cost.
