Chapter 16 — Maine

Six months later, the afternoon sun streamed through the wide bay windows of our new home, in a quiet coastal town in Maine, and the air that came through the open door carried the clean, mingled scent of pine trees and the sea.

I sat on the porch rocker, holding six-month-old Fiona as she giggled and kicked her tiny feet in a bright yellow sunsuit, delighted by the world and by nothing in particular, in the way of babies who have never known a single unsafe day.

Luca walked out onto the porch carrying two mugs of hot coffee.
