“She lives about two hours away from here,” Samantha answered smoothly.

I stared at her in utter disbelief.

“You just said she was living overseas.”

“She moved back to the area several years ago,” Samantha clarified.

“And Madeline still never mentioned her to me?”

Samantha looked noticeably uncomfortable for the first time during our meeting.

“She fully intended to tell you everything eventually.”

“When was eventually supposed to happen?” I asked softly.
